Instant Rava Idli Recipe Description

Instant rava idli is perfect Indian breakfast and very popular in Southern part of India. No soaking, no grinding, no fermenting & mess free recipe. Super easy soft, airy, spongy instant rava/sooji idli made in two ways with or without idli maker. Steamed healthy breakfast for anyday. This Indian veg recipe is a healthier substitute as a tea time snack or could be also served as an evening snack. Here is step by step easy recipe on how to make soft idlis at home.

Ingredients for Rava Idli Recipe

  • 1 cup coarse sooji/rava/semolina
  • 1 cup yogurt/curd
  • 1 green chili chopped
  • Some chopped curry leaves
  • 1tbsp chana dal/split Bengal gram
  • 1 tbsp urad dal/ split black gram
  • 1/8 tsp asafetida (hing)
  • 1 tsp eno fruit salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 150 ml water
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 grated carrot
  • Some roasted cashew

Rava Idli Recipe Method

Step 1

In a heated pan add oil. In hot oil add mustard seeds, green chili, chana dal, urad dal, asafetida (hing), curry leaves and sauté until fragrant. Add coarse sooji, stir well for 2 minutes and add carrot. Give it a good mix. Turn off heat and take out in a bowl. Let it cool down.

Step 2

In a bowl add 1 cup of yogurt/ curd and slowly add 100ml water mix well. Add salt to taste and again mix well. Pour yogurt/ curd in cooled rava mixture and mix. Cover it and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Step 3

Check idli batter after 30 minutes and adjust consistency. Add little water around 50 ml. Mix well and make sure batter is not too thick or runny. To this add 1 tsp eno fruit salt and just mix well (no over mixing). Grease idli maker with oil or ghee. Fill idli stand add 1 roasted cashew; some grated carrot and pour idli batter. Tap it a bit.
Using another method, in silicone cups fill batter ¾ and shake it lightly. Add grated carrot in the centre and top with roasted cashew. Place silicone cups in a steamer

Step 4

In a pressure cooker add sufficient water and bring it to boil. Place idli stand/ silicone cups with steamer inside the pressure cooker and steam for 15 minutes on medium heat. Make sure to remove whistle from pressure cooker lid.

Step 5

Take them out from pressure cooker after 15 minutes. Let them rest for 5 minutes and demould one by one. It will come out very easily. Light, airy, soft, healthy steamed idlis are ready to go in your stomach. Enjoy idlis with steaming hot sambhar and coconut chutney. Pure bliss!
